Story behind the song
Like all of my writing, these characters are fictional with real qualities.
Lyrics
Old John Finnley sent straight to the grave Some Finnley kin took an axe to his head The neighbors found him back behind his barn Smelled a rotten Finnley from 200 yards There were signs of trouble and this they knew His mind and body they were now two The town all knew he had a real meanstreak Beat his wife Mary, they could hear her scream He'd drink and swear, and wish ya disease Most often fell to the doom he preached He would scare the children, make their Mommas hide When he'd get drunk he was hell on fire Old John Finnley Back from the grave Took his head and he wants revenge Poor poor Mary he knows it's you He's gonna haunt dreams Now although Old Mary had performed a deed Through the years she became just as Dark a seed She cheated John, with his brother Jack She'd convinced brother Jack to swing the Axe When the dust had settled, they assumed his home but It was clear to them they were not alone Old John's Ghost could be heard in the wind Took my head, and I'll have revenge And he appeared before them, headless ghoul Pointed at the two with forewarning scorn They fled with fear, at the sight they saw Old Finnely back to settle the score Well Jack took off through the cabbage fields He got tangled up in the wires barbed They severed his head, just as John had warned Mary screamed, and she ran the other way into the barn were Jack and her had laid She raced up the ladder to the upstairs loft Wrapped the winching rope around her neck Before John could catch her, Mary she jumped off The old ghost Finnley got on his knees He leaned over Mary and whispered sweet... Bet you thought you've seen the last of me... Until I meet you back in Hell
