Story behind the song
I was listening to this song and I thought I heard the words Sheriff Coaltrain but I didn't.I thought hey I love songs with someones name in the title. It's about time I write one myself.Someone didn't like the original version of the lyrics because there was no details of what happened to the Sheriff,I was writing it with my Dad in mind.He hates videos that portray the story cause in his mind he interprets the song differently and it wrecks it for him.I was leaving it that way for him. Then I sent Kip a message not expecting him to come along side because Kip is now writing with his wife which is great.I never even blinked an eye it seemed and there was Kip to the rescue and had all the details in place. The surprise to me and still split my guts open every time I hear it cause Kip included me in the song at the end. What a surprise.
Lyrics
Marchetti/Killam Original Lyrics Sheriff Coaltrain Sheriff Coaltrain was riding home one day. Sheriff Coaltrain was riding home one day. He never really saw it coming. He never did and that's the fact. Sheriff Coaltrain was riding home last May. He had a heavy burden that he carried. And a rifle at his side. He had a heavy burden that he carried. And a rifle at his side. And they say the soul Can't last long that way Watch your back Sheriff. He had a heavy burden that he carried. And a rifle at his side. Shefiff Coaltrain was riding home one day Sheriff Coaltrain was riding home one day. He never really saw it coming. He never did and that's the fact. Sheriff Coaltrain was riding home last May. Sheriff Coaltrain was riding home last May. And that lonesome road he travelled Was like a bullet in his back. And that lonesome road he travelled Was like a bullet in his back. And no matter where you travel You better watch your back. And no matter where you travel You better watch your back. Sheriff Coaltrain was riding home last May. Sheriff Coaltrain was riding home last May. Kips added details:Rewrite Sheriff Coaltrain Sheriff Coaltrain was riding home one day. Sheriff Coaltrain was riding home one hot and dusty day. He never really saw it coming. He never did and that's the fact. Ol' Sheriff Coaltrain took ... a bullet in his back He had a heavy burden that he carried (slight pause) He had a heavy burden that he carried. And a rifle at his side. Cause he was the only law that anyone can recall women and men cried the day he died And that lonesome road that he travelled Was a long and righteous path til some drunkin' thieven men cowards to the end put a bullet in sheriff coaltrains back (Some sort of pickin' break w/dobro slide) (bridge) and that long black veil hung mighty low and he breathed his last breath just before his son showed after he put his pa to rest he made a vow and pinned that badge on his chest One by one they was riding home One by one them ol' sons a b*** es was riding home alone They never really saw it coming. They never even turned around the new Sheriff Coaltrain put'em in the ground Lord Lord The new Sheriff Coaltrain put'em in the ground. Then the surprise at the end~LOL.
