Bluebird on my Windshield
Recorded for The New CD at Listen Studios (La Grande, OR) with Matt Snook (banjo), Anna Snook (Fiddle), Sharon Porter (standup bass).
Solo songwriter/guitarist.
Story behind the song
Happened because of a mistake. I was looking over the shoulder of one of our Friday Night musicians while she was leafing through her sheet music, and I thought I saw a song entitled "Bluebird on my Windshield." And I said, "Ooo. I want to learn *that* one." Turned out to be "Bluebird on my WINDOWSILL." But I couldn't get the "bluebird on my windshield" image out of my head until I wrote this.
My wife says I should emphasize this song is NOT about her.

BLUEBIRD ON MY WINDSHIELD
–J. Wrabek
1.
I ran into a bluebird, out on Highway Fifty-eight,
And I can't forget the look she gave me ‘fore she passed away;
I left her stickin' to the glass as I went down the road,
‘Cause that bluebird on my windshield makes me feel like I'm at home.
CHORUS
There's a bluebird on my windshield, reminding me of you–
She looks at me accusingly, the way you always do;
Watches ev'rywhere I go, and ev'rything I do–
Bluebird on my windshield, reminding me of you.
2.
There's a bluebird on my windshield, that brightens up my day,
Even though she doesn't hear a single thing I say;
She don't complain about the rain, or potholes in the road,
And she doesn't kick me out of bed the way you do at home.
CHORUS
3.
I got all the truckers jealous of my fantastic luck–
Ain't no one else got bluebirds hanging lifeless off their truck;
And when we stop for diesel, I'll protect her with my life–
I'll say, "Son, don't scrape that bluebird off–she reminds me of my wife."
CHORUS
4.
There's a bluebird on my windshield, but I know that it can't last–
We're droppin' little bluebird parts in ev'ry town we pass;
I know that soon she'll blow away, some field to fertilize,
Leaving me with memories of you–in bluebird eyes.
CHORUS
REPEAT LAST LINE OF CHORUS & END
